Why does it feel like you are constantly failing in relationships? Going to therapy for trust issues can be helpful. Part of the therapy process is understanding where or what trust issues are rooted in and then helping you work towards learning to rebuild trust not only in your relationships but also in yourself. Below are the questions I will go over today. If you have a question that you don’t see below, drop it in the comments or send me an email at jrubiohobbs@lavandawellness.com.
Trust is expecting the same pattern from a situation or person. If you’ve experienced betrayal from someone it can be a natural response to expect the same thing to happen even though your loved one says otherwise.
Even in a healthy relationship, if you have experienced unhealthy relationship patterns in the past, you might find that you expect or trust that the same issues will reoccur in your new relationship. Trust issues can develop for several reasons. For example, trust issues can be due to seeing infidelity in loved ones’ relationships, experiencing infidelity or betrayal in your past relationships, or experiencing infidelity or betrayal in your current relationship.
Counseling can help with trust issues by helping you work through past relationship traumas whether it is trauma that you witnessed growing up in your parents relationship or trauma from your personal relationships. Holistic Counseling can also help you address the trust issues at two levels (the mind and the body). Our bodies have a way of protecting us and the gut feeling telling you something is wrong can become overactive after a trauma. By combining body based approaches with traditional talk therapy you can help your body to calm down the “something is wrong” signals. Holistic counseling can also help retrain your mind to shift your mindset from worry to calm. Using a mind-body approach with holistic counseling allows you to process your relationship trauma in a more thorough way going beyond the surface and addressing what lies beneath.
No. While couples therapy is an option, working on trust issues can be done as individual work. Individual therapy for trust issues allows you to focus on the root of where trust issues stem in your personal life and allows you to gain a deeper understanding of any patterns that might be part of the issue. By doing individual work you are also able to focus on your personal communication style and different ways to better communicate your thoughts and feelings with your partner.
